IRA or Retirement Plan Benefits

IRA accounts and qualified plan retirement benefits can be some of the most valuable assets you own during your lifetime. These assets grow tax deferred and, as a result, it is easier to accumulate retirement savings than with taxable investments. Unfortunately, these assets can be among the least valuable to your heirs, especially if your estate is large enough to be subject to estate taxes. This is because IRAs and retirement plan accounts are subject to both estate and income taxes then they pass to an individual or trust beneficiaries. For instance, subject to tax law changes and individual circumstances, a descendant (other than a spouse) may receive as little as 33 cents on the dollar for a retirement plan subject to estate tax.
If you designate the Humane Society of St. Lucie as a primary or partial beneficiary of a retirement fund balance, there is no estate tax and no income tax on the amount passing to the Humane Society.

Life Insurance

Choosing to support the Humane Society of St. Lucie by designating the charity as your life insurance beneficiary is a simple and effective way to support the important work we do. If you have an insurance policy, you may change the beneficiary to the Humane Society of St. Lucie or designate the shelter as a contingent beneficiary. You can even gift the policy itself and contribute funds to pay for the insurance premiums.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable remainder trust can provide income to you and your spouse so long as either of you live. Thereafter, the trust principal will go to the Humane Society of St. Lucie. You may name other charities as principal recipients as well.

Retirement Funds

For those who have significant retirement plan assets, potential estate and income taxes on the account balance at death can be avoided by making the Humane Society the beneficiary of any plan assets.

Outright Gift

A direct gift of cash, appreciated securities or real properties may be the most convenient way for you to make a contribution to the Humane Society of St. Lucie.
