HUMANE SOCIETY OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY REPORTING STATISTICS
Census figures for 2009 show the population of St. Lucie County is 266,502. It
is estimated that over 135,000 dogs and cats currently reside in St. Lucie
County.
For the calendar year 2008-2009 the Humane Society of St. Lucie County took
in a combined total 7,167 dogs and cats from St. Lucie County.
The total number of unhealthy and untreatable animals, including those that
are severely injured, sick, or aggressive that were humanely euthanized was
4,954. The represents a 3 percent decrease from the previous year.
550 cats and 812 dogs, for a total of 1,362, were adopted to new homes and 633 animals were returned to their owners.
In addition The Humane Society continues to support St. Lucie County and the
City of Fort Pierce ordinance requiring dog and cat owners to alter and
license their animals. More than 300 animals were altered at no cost to the
owner at the Humane Society spay and neuter clinic.
