About HSSLC
Who we are:
- We are a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation which depends upon the community, businesses and individuals for support.
- We have been in existence since 1955.
- Volunteers, a board of directors and 28 employees have accepted the challenge of caring for the nearly 10,000 animals we receive each year from the animal control agencies and residents of our county.
- We have contractual agreements with the three county municipalities: Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce and unincorporated St. Lucie County.
- We advocate responsible companion animal care and spaying and neutering.
- Education is an integral part of our Mission Statement.
- 40% of the animals we receive are either adopted or returned to their human family. Sadly, the remainder are humanely euthanized, as there is neither enough space nor money to care for all the animals we receive.
How you can help:
- Give your time and become a Humane Society volunteer.
- Become a member of the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
- Donate funds to help us to expand our spay/neuter services, our classroom educational programs, implement our needed shelter improvement program for a new air exchange system for our kittens and cats, as well as improving our facilities for puppies and dogs.
- Schedule a Humane Education presentation in your classroom, for your youth group or for your community.
- Urge your elected officials to pass legislation to improve the lives of St. Lucie County animals.
- Help get laws passed and enforced that require strict adherence to animal protection standards.
- Be responsible with your companion animals. Make sure your animal is vaccinated regularly and spayed or neutered to prevent thousands of unwanted animals in St. Lucie County.
