Africa, rabies is still all too common. While rabies is thought
of as a rare disease in much of the Western world, it remains
disturbingly widespread in many underdeveloped regions. In
Africa, rabies claims the lives of nearly 25,000 people -
many of whom are children - each year.
What's
worse, the prevalence of rabies in Africa may be underestimated.
By the time the symptoms appear, rabies is inevitably fatal.
Consequently, many victims of rabies are never admitted to
a hospital and die at home. This makes collecting accurate
surveillance data a challenge.
Rabies
is as preventable as it is deadly.
