Hurricane Preparedness

June 1st begins the offical hurricane season for Florida residents. The Humane Society of St. Lucie County reminds the community to make plans for their pets in case of an emergency. A pet's care package should include a leash, sealed food, bottles of water, filled prescriptions (enough to last an extended time) and current veterinarian records. Ensure the pet is up-to-date on shots and is wearing proper rabies and identification tags with current phone numbers. Microchipping the pet in advance is also very effective if the tags are ever separated from the pet. Most veterinarians and The Humane Society of St. Lucie County can microchip a pet for around $25.

In the event a home must be evacuated, make plans to take the pets along. When traveling with a pet, have a crate or kennel which can be used to secure a pet in the vehicle and at the destination. Many hotels are pet-friendly and can be researched in advance online or through printed literature, such as the AAA PetBook. Additionally, many boarding facilities and veterinarians offer reservations for hurricanes if the pet cannot stay with the owner.

Although the Humane Society is not able to board pets during emergencies due to limited capacity, the shelter offers a list of pet-friendly boarding and hotels.
