Bark Buddy

Love dogs and want to make a difference? Volunteer as a Bark Buddy and you can help by:

  • Walking dogs at the shelter, providing them needed play time
  • Helping them socialize
  • Using your training skills to teach manners
  • Transporting dogs to off-site adoptions, such as PETCO and weekend events

Volunteers at the shelter must be 15 years of age or older. Volunteers at PETCO must be 18 years of age or older. We are a drug-free workplace.

How to start volunteering

It's simple! Just fill out a volunteer application and send it to Paula O'Neal at volunteers@hsslc.org or P.O. Box 3661, Fort Pierce, FL 34948. Questions? Call Paula at 772-461-0687 ext 224.

We DO accept volunteers needing to complete hours for school and community service.

Can't volunteer at the shelter and still want to help?

We commonly hear many reasons that people cannot volunteer at the shelter, such as
"I would like to help, but just can't visit the shelter. I would want to take them all home." or
"I'm not old enough or strong enough to walk dogs."

You CAN still help! Here are some ideas:

  • Start a toy or supply drive. Check out our wish list.
  • Raise funds for the dogs. You can sponsor a dog, provide money to a special medical fund or make a donation to the overall care for the dogs.
  • Hold an event for the dogs.
  • Make toys or blankets as part of our Crafty Critter program
  • Like taking photos or video? Donate your time and photos and show off your skills with our Photo Fancier program. You can even share them with on FaceBook or eMail.
  • Help plan events for the dogs with our Party Animal program.
  • Select a single dog and foster them in your home and REALLY make a difference. Check out our Foster Program.
